'80s songs that should be on the soundtrack

To celebrate the much-anticipated premiere of CW’s The Carrie Diaries on Monday, Jan. 14th , we have compiled a list of nine '80s songs that we hope against all hope are on the soundtrack. Just writing about these makes us want to shimmy into a pair of elastic stirrup pants and moonwalk to “Billie Jean.”

This one is a no-brainer, considering Carrie’s eventual segue from a young Manhattan intern to writer of all things sexy on Sex and The City. Perhaps this song helped her find her calling.

Oh, the chills this song causes when we think about Emilio Estevez looking all hot and rebellious in The Breakfast Club. Don't pretend you don't love Emilio Estevez, circa 1987.

The invitation in the refrain of this song sounds a little messy, and like it might be more awesome in the song than in practice, but it is the perfect sexy soundtrack for gettin’ it on or going to the gym. Either one works.

We will forgive Cyndi Lauper for looking more and more like a crazy poodle as the years go by because this song is perfect for a girls’ night out or in. Pillow fight!

The Thriller music video is one of the most iconic videos of all time. It has inspired countless dance performances and questionable Halloween costumes. We can see Carrie dancing to Thriller in both the '80s and early '00s.

We like this middle finger of a song for Carrie as she learns to navigate Manhattan and the real world as a young adult. Take that, bosses/parents/school/boyfriends.

What is it with '80s pop stars looking more and more like crazy poodles as the years go by, anyway? Never mind — we love Paula in all her quirkiness. This song is so fun to dance to in step aerobics and Jazzercise, so all is forgiven.

This song is actually pretty obnoxious, but it is quintessential '80s, and remains obnoxiously fun to this day. We love it for amping up the sass during a glamour shot session. After all, what is worth fighting for if we have lost our right to party?

A staple of inebriated wedding guests who find themselves in possession of a microphone, this party anthem is the ultimate closing-down-the-club song. We can almost hear young Carrie belting out the refrain after her first night out in Manhattan.
