19 Thelma & Louise references you didn't notice on your favorite shows & films

In 1991, Thelma & Louise was billed as a female buddy flick, when in truth it was a feminist revolution on screen — one so powerful that it still resonates today. Along with a meaningful on-screen message was an off-screen story equally as compelling. Thelma & Louise was written by a woman (Callie Khouri) and starred actresses who were not classic ingénues (Sarandon was 45 years old and Davis was 35 years old) in the Hollywood tradition.

The beauty of the film was more than just its on-screen story about strong women who think about their lives and desires, especially the ones that don't include men. Thelma & Louise gave us a window into the souls of forceful characters who had agency and influence over their own destiny.

The film impacted, and continues to impact, pop culture — even today.

1. Cheers

In an episode called, "Get Your Kicks on Route 666" Norm, Frasier, Sam and Cliff take a road trip.

Dr. Frasier Crane: [about Frasier, Sam, Norm and Cliff taking a road trip] We're all dropping our inhibitions, we're going to go out and find our manhood on the open road.
Sam Malone: Yeah, like men.
Cliff Clavin: Yeah, like men, we be.
Dr. Frasier Crane: Real men.
Norm Peterson: Yeah, like those chicks on Thelma and Louise.

2. The Simpsons

Thelma & Louise must have had a considerable impact on the writers since aspects of the film were used multiple times in episodes over the years. Here are our three favorites:

"Marge on the Lam" (1993) (2:12 minutes in)

Marge and her new pal, Ruth Powers, form a Thelma and Louise type bond which ends with the inevitable high speed chase, except the women stop in time.

In "Homer Alone" (1992), Marge takes a much-needed break from her motherly duties by spending time at the spa, Rancho Relaxo. While there, she turns on the TV where Troy McClure (voiced by Phil Hartman) says, "The finest R-rated movies Europe has to offer. Oooh la la, today's selections are…"

Then we see:

Thelma & Louise (photo sent via e-mail, high res avail)

In "Screaming Yellow Honkers" (1999), when Homer buys an SUV made for women, he gives it to Marge, who discovers her inner road rage. Chief Wiggum pulls Marge over for a traffic violation and tells her to "can the sweet talk, Thelma and Louise."

3. American Dad

"A Ward Show" (Season 7)

Stan and Francine force Roger to be Steve's legal guardian so they can go on vacation to the world's largest water park. When Roger is too much for Steve, he befriends Principal Lewis. When both of their lives end up in a downward spiral, Principal Lewis tries to drive he and Steve off the Grand Canyon, pulling a Thelma & Louise, but they are saved by Roger's love:

"When you love someone hard enough, you always know where they are."

4. Law & Order

In "Point of View" (season 3), a woman is arrested for killing a man in self-defense, who she claimed tried to rape her, but Brisco and Logan suspect it was a mob hit. The drama of it all prompts D.A. Adam Schiff to have this exchange with prosecutor Ben Stone:

Ben: "You want me to drop it?"
Adam: "They gave Thelma & Louise an Oscar. Without more, I'd call it a day."

5. The Professional

In this critically acclaimed film about a seasoned hitman, Léon (Jean Reno) and his 12-year-old apprentice, Mathilda (Natalie Portman), there are several scenes where Léon tries to dissuade her from following in his footsteps.

Mathilda: I've decided what to do with my life. I wanna be a cleaner.

Léon: You wanna be a cleaner?

[passes her a gun and bullets]

Léon: Here, take it. It's a goodbye gift. Go clean. But not with me. I work alone, understand? Alone.

Mathilda: Bonnie and Clyde didn't work alone. Thelma and Louise didn't work alone. And they were the best.

6. Mystery Science Theater 3000 a.k.a. MST3K

It is a given that any show that makes fun of movies as much as MST3K does must have Thelma & Louise references. Clearly, Tom, Joel, Mike, Crow and Servo are such huge fans of the film, they mention it several times over the years. Here are just a few:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "It Conquered the World" (1991)

Tom: Think that's Thelma or Louise?

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Crash of Moons" (1992)

Joel: Thelma & Louise: 1999.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Radar Secret Service" (1993)

Servo: Hey, Thelma and Luigi.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Teen-Age Crime Wave" (1994)

Mike: Thelma and Louise and Steve.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Village of the Giants" (1994)

Crow: Oh, this is where Thelma and Louise landed!

7. Boys on the Side

In the film Boys on the Side (1995), Jane (Whoopi Goldberg) is an unemployed nightclub singer who meets up with Robin (Mary-Louise Parker) for a ride share to California. When they pick up Holly (Drew Barrymore) escaping a violent drug-dealer, Jane says, "I am not going over a cliff for you two [girls]."

8. Roseanne

In "The Getaway, Almost" (1995), Roseanne and Jackie's shopping trip turns into a road trip when they pick up a hitchhiker (Jenna Elfman).

Jackie: I'll take our picture, just like Thelma and Louise.

Roseanne: Well, I do look like Geena Davis, and you look exactly like Harvey Keitel.

9. 3rd Rock From The Sun

In the episode “Angry Dick” (1996), Dick convinces everyone that if they get to know their neighbors, they can learn more about humans. So Sally (Kristen Johnston) decides to get to know Patty Muller (Lois Foraker).

Sally: So, does Frank know you're with me?

Patty: No, I told him I was setting a perm. Does Dick know you're with me?

Sally: No, I injected him with a sedative. I've got at least two more hours.

Patty: Oh, we're like Thelma and Louise, except we just came to the supermarket; we haven't killed anyone.

Sally: It's early yet.

10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

In the season 2 episode "Ted" (1997), Buffy's mom is bringing home a new boyfriend, Ted (John Ritter), who is not quite what he seems. After Buffy defeats Ted, she and her mom decide to forget about their ordeal with a night in.

Joyce: Do you want to rent a movie tonight?

Buffy: Sounds like fun.

Joyce: Just nothing with horror in it. Or romance. Or men.

Buffy: I guess we're Thelma and Louise-ing it again.

11. Seinfeld

In an episode called "The Dealership" (1998), Jerry is looking for a new car while Kramer goes on a test drive with Rick, the car dealer.

Rick: Oh, this is amazing! Oh, I've never felt so alive!

Kramer: Yeah, well, all right. I'm satisfied. We better get some gas.

Rick: What? Well, we can't stop now.

Kramer: What do you mean?

Rick: We have to keep going — all the way back to the dealership. That was the plan.

Kramer: There was no plan.

Rick: Well, let's make it the plan! Let's just... go for it! Like Thelma and Louise.

Kramer: What, they drove to a dealership?

Rick: No, they drove off a cliff.

(Kramer eyes Rick, frightened)

Kramer: You are one sick mama. I like it.

12. Family Guy

Family Guy has done many musical parodies and homages to "Road to…" films. In "The Road to Rhode Island" (2000), Brian and Stewie sing, "We're quite a pair of partners like Thelma and Louise."

 (:41 seconds in)

13. Starsky & Hutch (2004)

When Starsky (Ben Stiller) and Hutch (Owen Wilson) decide to drive off the jetty and land their car onto a boat, the dialogue they use is the same as when Thelma and Louise go over the cliff.

Hutch: Things could go pretty wrong…

Starsky: Keep your eyes on the road. Listen to me, Ken. If we don't make it, this. You know, us...

Hutch: It's been good.

Starsky: It's been great.

14. Rent (2005)

Thelma and Louise even influenced Broadway musicals. In Angel's number "Today4U" on stage and in the film, she sings the line, "Just like Thelma and Louise did when they got the blues / Swandove into the courtyard of the Gracie Mews."

(the line starts at1:39)

15. How I Met Your Mother

"Best Prom Ever" (2006) is an episode where Lily and Robin crash a high school prom to check out a potential band for Lily’s wedding. Since the girls are planning a night out, the guys decide to do the same:

Marshall: We should just go out and get freaking weird!

Ted: Yeah!

Marshall: 'Cause you can be a bad, bad man and I'll be an outlaw.

Barney: Hey, Thelma, Louise, y'all don't drive off no cliffs now, y'hear?

16. Smallville

In a 2009 episode called "Savior," Clark is ready to start his training at the Fortress of Solitude to become Superman, while Chloe and Dr. Emil Hamilton try to make scientific sense of the time-space distortions.

Lois says that Chloe, "Played Thelma and Louise with the Creature from the Black Lagoon," referring to Davis Bloome, the human camouflage for Doomsday.

17. Parks and Recreation

During season 3, episode 16, named "Lil Sebastian," Tom convinces Jean-Ralphio to start a production company. When it's a hit, Jean-Ralphio has a brilliant idea:

Jean-Ralphio: You've gotta join the company. I'm the bank, you're the money.

Tom: I know, Jay, but it will be a big leap.

Jean-Ralphio: Then, I will take that leap with you. I'm Thelma; you're Louise.

18. 30 Rock

In "What Will Happen to the Gang Next Year?" (2012), Chriss tells Liz that there are only three kinds of women over 40 who are still single: crazies, uggos and bailers. He deduces that she is a bailer. When he finally makes a grand gesture to show his love, they have the following conversation:

Liz: I won't bail on you.

Criss: You won't bail on me!

Liz: Have you ever had a girlfriend willing to Thelma and Louise with you?

Criss: No, never, but c'mon, Bonnie and Clyde, I'm a boy.

Tina Fey loves the Thelma & Louise references so much she uses it again in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in "Kimmy Makes Waffles!" when
Lillian says, "This is getting a real 'Thelma & Louise' vibe."

19. The Vampire Diaries

When Elena Gilbert is playing darts at the Mystic Grill in an episode called "The Walking Dead" (2013), Rebekah approaches her, but Elena tells her, "I get that we had our Thelma and Louise thing back when." Sadly, now Elena had her humanity switched off so they are "not friends."

More: No, rom-coms don't make you OK with male stalking

If that is not enough, here is a list of movies that reference Thelma & Louise:

Kim Kardashian one-upped your last pregnancy scare — she shared hers on Snapchat

Another baby for Kimye?

Not so fast.

Kim Kardashian's latest Snapchat story captured a special moment in every woman's life: an unwanted pregnancy scare. In a series of photos and videos she uploaded to the media sharing app Thursday, Kardashian revealed that she had bought six pregnancy tests and was taking all of them in an airplane bathroom, because when you gotta know, you gotta know.

Kardashian captioned the photo of all six tests — from three different brands, just to be sure — simply, "Panic attack." This may be the most relatable she's ever been.

Image: Kim Kardashian/Snapchat

In a video taken in the plane bathroom mirror, Kardashian explained the sish.

"I’m legit in the airplane bathroom and I’m gonna take a pregnancy test, because I’m having a little bit of a scare," she admitted. "So, no big deal."

And then, of course, she kept all her fans and followers up to date on the outcome of the stressful situation by posting a photo of her pregnancy test results: not pregnant. Phew.

Image: Kim Kardashian/Snapchat

While Kardashians kids, North and Saint, are some of the cutest offspring in Hollywood, we can't exactly blame Kardashian for not being ready to become a third-time mom just yet. Saint is only six months old, after all, and Kardashian's extremely difficult pregnancies have been well-documented — while pregnant with Saint, she ended up with a life-threatening condition that caused her uterus and placenta to fuse together.

And while her husband, Kanye West, has said in interviews that he's open to the idea of having more kids, Kardashian told Scott Disick during an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians that she isn't sure if she even can get pregnant again after all of her past complications.

Are you hoping to see another Kimye baby in the future?

Still upset by Blake Lively's 'Oakland booty'? Sir Mix-A-Lot has words for you

Blake Lively's got (Sir Mix-A-Lot at her) back.

More: Blake Lively should be offended by Woody Allen — not Woody Allen rape jokes

Following a ton of backlash Lively faced on Twitter for posting a photo of her rear end with the caption, "An L.A. face with an Oakland booty," Sir Mix-A-Lot is speaking out in support of Lively, who borrowed a line from his chart-topper "Baby Got Back" for the caption.

"The reason I wrote the song was because I always felt that the African American idea of what was beautiful was shunned… what was promoted as beautiful was kind of really waif-thin, borderline heroin addicts. I don’t mean that literally, I mean the look. That was kind of pushed at us, and we were told that it was beautiful, and what I started to see was some people of color either being ashamed of who they were or trying their best to assimilate," he said in a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I wrote this song not as a battle between the races. I wrote the song because I wanted Cosmopolitan, I wanted all these big magazines to kind of open up a little bit and say, ‘Wait a minute, this may not be the only beautiful.'"

More: Alert: Blake Lively and Eva Mendes may be pregnant (or they just ate a sandwich)

He then spoke up in support of Lively, saying her post proves that beauty standards are being rewritten.

"Fast-forward to Blake Lively. For her to look at her butt and that little waist and to say 'L.A. face with an Oakland booty,' doesn’t that mean that the norm has changed, that the beautiful people have accepted our idea of beautiful? That’s the way I took it," he said. "If what Blake Lively meant by that comment was, 'Oh my goodness, I’ve gained weight, I look horrible,' — and I doubt that she did — then I’m with the critics. But no one in the world is gonna tell me that a woman that wears that dress is thinking that she’s fat… It sounds like to me like she was giving the line props."

But that's not it. You can even wear the lyrics on your body. That's right, new to his merch lineup is a T-shirt with "LA face" on the front and "Oakland booty" on the back.

We're with Ariana Grande — Selena Gomez is so much more than Justin Bieber's ex

$

Ariana Grande is growing up, and at the same time, developing some feminist ideals that are making us absolutely love her.

More: Stars explain why Ariana Grande, Hillary Clinton are inspirational to them (VIDEO)

Grande, a former Nickelodeon star who grew up in the spotlight, has had her fair share of embarrassing public moments, most notably that time she was caught on camera licking donuts on a store counter while saying, "I hate America."

But she's been quietly working on her new album for the past year, and if her latest interview with Billboard magazine is any indication, she's done a lot of growing during her time outside of the public eye.

While the entire interview, though lengthy, is well worth a read, our favorite parts come when Grande supports her fellow female artist, Selena Gomez, who is often referred to in headlines not by her name, but as Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend.

"I’ll never be able to swallow the fact that people feel the need to attach a successful woman to a man when they say her name," Grande says. "Call her by her name! I hate that. Like, I’m fuming. Sorry. You opened up... I need to take a sip of water and breathe. Don’t get me started on this shit."

More: Ariana Grande goes on expletive-filled rant about homophobia

Grande has some of her own experience with this; since her breakup with Big Sean, she's been attached to the rapper in headlines where she should have been standing on her own.

In her interview, Grande also comments on the show-biz double standard that praises men for their bodies, yet demands that women keep theirs covered.

"If you’re going to rave about how sexy a male artist looks with his shirt off, and a woman decides to get in her panties or show her boobies for a photo shoot, she needs to be treated with the same awe and admiration," Grande says.

Preach!

Grey's Anatomy pissed off fans with Callie's low-key send-off

During Thursday's Season 12 finale of Grey's Anatomy, another major character said farewell to the Shonda Rhimes drama. As suspected for some time now, Sara Ramirez exited as Callie Torres after 10 years in the role.

More: Grey's Anatomy: I'm totally #TeamArizona after the custody hearing

It's never easy saying goodbye to a beloved character, but clearly, Ramirez was ready to go. After the finale aired, she released a statement reading, "I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now I’m taking some welcome time off. Shonda’s been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!"

Take note, she said "some" time off, which just might mean she'll be back at some point. At least that's good news, right?

Well, it's clear fans are not happy with how Callie ended up leaving. It had nothing to do with Callie and Arizona making amends, Arizona giving Callie joint custody of Sofia, and Arizona purchasing plane tickets to New York so Callie could go be with Penny. It had to do with the fact that she was barely in the episode. Granted, it could have been Ramirez's choice, or maybe she even had some input in her departure and decided the smallest amount of Callie was best.

Well, based on a handful of tweets, some fans wanted more Callie, not less. I can't imagine writing off a character that has been part of a series for a decade. I'm sure Rhimes wanted to do Callie justice, but fans don't think the show did right by her. Maybe, just maybe, this is a sign that Callie will truly return in the future, because I have a feeling that if she was leaving permanently, Rhimes would've given her a bigger storyline.

I don't know if that makes those unhappy fans feel any better. Whatever the case, here's how some of them are reacting on Twitter.

The Catch's season finale has me dreading Season 2

$

0

At the end of the two-hour Season 1 finale of The Catch, I watched Shonda Rhimes' tough heroine Alice turn into a Disney princess, being rescued by the man who conned her into believing their yearlong love affair was real and then stole everything from her. This is not the woman-scorned-and-gets-revenge show I signed on for.

Shame on you, Shonda.

More: The Catch: I'm convinced Ben's hold on Alice is bordering on abuse

Here's a quick review of the season: When we first met Alice, the co-owner of a detective agency, she was karate kicking the crap out of some thief at a cocktail party. We got a glimpse of her softer side when she met her soon-to-be lover Ben; of course, we already knew he was a con man. As the story quickly went on, Ben asked Alice to run away with him (before she knew he was a criminal), but she understandably said no. Why would she leave her friends, her successful business and amazing life, which, by the way, she built herself?

Since she wasn't into the runaway life, Ben went back to his con-artist life and former lover Margot (I like to call her the psychopath).

Alice found out who and what Ben was and the emotions started to surface: pain, because she had fallen in love with him; shame, because she got her colleagues into financial trouble; embarrassment, because she was a detective and her job was to spot the bad guys; and last, but not least, vengeance, because she had a badass, mess-with-me-I-mess-you-up-worse credo.

Yes, Alice was going to be the role model for every woman who's ever been screwed over. She was going to chase Ben down all over Los Angeles — and the world — and put him away. At least, I thought that was going to be the story in the finale and all future seasons to come.

More: The Catch: Alice is sleeping with Benjamin again... and I don't care

But, alas, that didn't pan out. Throughout the first season, The Catch transitioned from a complex cat-and-mouse game to a simple story about love. After all the back-and-forth, Ben proposed to Alice and (gasp!) she said yes.

I have to admit, I’m a bit disappointed that someone in law enforcement like Alice wouldn’t understand that there is a high rate of recidivism for career criminals, especially one as successful as Ben. I mean, even Anne Hathaway knew that. Remember when she got caught up with a suave Italian guy who turned out to be a con man? You don't see her married to him, do you?

Here's my problem with the ending: Ben doesn't know what love is. And on top of that, Margot's still on the run. Who needs or wants to deal with all this shit?

With the show’s renewal, and Alice and Ben now on the same side of the law, I can only imagine that Season 2 is going to look like a remake of that early '80s dramedy Hart to Hart with Robert Wagner and Jill St. John as husband and wife sleuths.

Will Alice and Ben solve crimes as they talk over the case through Plexiglas? Or will she bust him out of the big house à la an episode of Prison Break? Will she help her lawyer get Ben out of jail on a technicality so they can go to Turks and Caicos and start over, only to find themselves on the run from Margot with nothing but Ben’s con-man skills to help them survive?

More: The Catch haters fail to understand what Shondaland is all about

On the other hand, it did take quite a few seasons for Rhimes' other heroine Olivia Pope to get out of her will-we, won't-we relationship with Fitz on Scandal. Perhaps next season, common sense will prevail for Alice as well.

What did you think of the finale? Let us know in the comments below.

What happened at Katy Perry's Cannes performance? It looks like a mess

Katy Perry got in her charity work with a performance at amfAR's 23rd Cinema Against AIDS Gala on Thursday. She performed "I Kissed a Girl" to what appears to be lukewarm reception in Cannes. In the video below, one audience member isn't even facing Perry as she dances to the floor on the stage behind him. That gentleman must have seen a lot of other celebs walking around in Cannes if he's too bored to even turn around and pretend to be interested in a pop icon.

In fairness, Perry doesn't quite seem to be giving the performance her all. Her lip-syncing is off, and at one point, she seems to give up halfway through a phrase. Shouldn't charity work mean she's trying even harder than usual?

If her performance wasn't exactly successful, Perry certainly at least knows how to make an entrance. After stunting on the red carpet in her curve-hugging Marchesa grown, she cracked that there was no way she was getting down the stairs without the help of two assistants.

She was joined at the gala by her boyfriend Orlando Bloom, but Entertainment Tonight reports that they didn't walk the red carpet together. Perhaps Bloom was waving at her, and that's what distracted her doing "I Kissed a Girl." We'll just never know.

Fans will be very pleased about what's in store for Duck Dynasty Season 10

$

Duck Dynasty's Season 10 premiere is right around the corner, and we got the inside scoop from Jep and Jessica Robertson about what's in store this year for the Robertson family.

More: Sadie Robertson gushes over newest Duck Dynasty engagement

"We have two weddings we're working on," Jessica teased. "Missy's oldest son, Reed, and Brighton, and then Rebecca, Corey's oldest, and John Reed, they're engaged. I think before the end of the year, they'll both be married. And then who knows who'll be next!"

While Jessica shared details about the family events coming up, Jep went straight to one of the big things the show is known for.

"We've definitely blown some stuff up, which has been a lot of fun," Jep said.

Jep continued that on the show, it's usually the Robertson men rather than producers who suggest blowing something up in the episode. In fact, the Robertsons have a lot of say about what makes it onto the show.

Jep candidly explained that if something funny happens in their normal day-to-day life while the cameras aren't rolling, they'll recreate moments for the show.

"You know when you have a good scene, everybody gets tickled and then the camera guys, I'll just see them in my peripheral just shaking like crazy. And we have to stop and do it again, and it's like, 'OK camera guys, don't laugh. We'll do it again.' So it takes like three takes for the camera guys not to shake."

Jep added, "We've had some really funny moments."

More: Duck Dynasty's Jep and Jessica Robertson debut their adopted son (PHOTOS)

"I think this season has kind of gotten back more to grass roots, funny, having a good time, you know what I'm saying? I think it's just good," he continued.

"We're kind of thinking this is our last 30 [episodes]," Jessica admitted. "It's just, you know, how many can you do?"

Don't get too disappointed, Duck Dynasty fans. After all, that means the show will be in its 13th season when it ends, which is a run no one can complain about.

"I could be surprised," Jessica admitted, but said these episodes are "about going out with a bang. Having a good time. Brothers reuniting. We'll have more Al in there, hopefully."

Jep also teased that there will be a few surprise guests showing up along with Al.

One of the topics Jep and Jessica said they'll be avoiding: the election. Don't expect them to weigh in on the candidates. Not only do these two try to stay out of the political spotlight — unlike some of their family members — but they also said with the timeline of the show being at least a few months behind real life, it didn't really make sense to incorporate those thoughts into the series.

"I try to stay out of that," Jep said of politics.

More: 6 reasons Duck Dynasty needs to go back to basics

But the fun, he's all about, and both Jep and Jessica seem to think this season could be one of the best and funniest in the show's history.

The new season of Duck Dynasty will air this summer.

Is being a woman equivalent to being a slave? Michelle Rodriguez thinks so

Caught on her way to a flight by TMZ, Michelle Rodriguez gives a surprise and surprisingly great interview about the state of the wage gap in Hollywood. After taking a moment to realize what the cameraman is asking ("Weight gap?") she gets on board with chatting about her feelings — all while checking in for her upcoming flight.

More: Michelle Rodriguez says she's jealous of Paul Walker's death... what?!

"It's a patriarchal society," she says. “It’s like being born a slave. You know it’s like, 'Oh damn. Darn my luck. I wish I was born somewhere else or maybe some other way,'" she continued. "But it is what it is."

She did agree that the gap exists. “I get paid a lot less than my colleagues.”

Rodriguez has been open about sexism in Hollywood in the past. In an interview with NJ.com last March, she said she has to work to steer clear of the female character archetypes that are so often being offered to her because of her gender. "I’m really picky about the parts I choose," she said. "I can’t be the slut. I cannot be just the girlfriend. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered because she’s been raped. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered and then dies."

If you're a fan of the Fifty Shades of Grey books but found yourself disappointed by the lack of steaminess in the movie version — and let's be real, the flick majorly fell short of expectations — Showtime may just have the real deal for you.

The network debuts Submission on May 12, and it's basically a no-holds-barred Fifty Shades of Grey on crack.

While Fifty Shades of Grey the movie failed to arouse interest for many, Submission is taking viewers deep into the world of BDSM — and it doesn't seem to be afraid to go there. The show focus is around Ashley, a beautiful but sexually unfulfilled woman who reads an erotic novel called Slave and embarks on her own journey into BDSM herself.

St. James didn't want to make just any old erotic series when she created Submission. She was on a mission to tell a truthful story about sexual desire — and debunk what she felt was an abusive portrayal of BDSM in Fifty Shades of Grey.

"I wanted to really showcase the idea that there is no normal when it comes to sex," St. James said to Uproxx. "Everything is normal. I really wanted to normalize something like BDSM, which people often stigmatize and judge without really knowing much about it. I wanted to humanize it. I think when people think BDSM, they have these very disgusting, grotesque notions of what it is. It could be either beating the hell out of somebody, which is not really the way it is, or they’re using Fifty Shades as a template, which is also really grotesque."

'Old MacDonald' is our Friday jam, thanks to a video of Gwen Stefani's son

With two hugely successful musicians as parents, it's no wonder Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's son Apollo is a natural onstage.

Stefani posted an adorable video of Apollo on Snapchat yesterday, and the tot was showing off his chops with a killer rendition of "Old MacDonald" that would totally get a coach on The Voice to turn her chair around.

"Old MacDonald had a cow, E-I-E-I-O!" Apollo sang on the mic while standing on his own makeshift stage — not a trace of stage fright to be seen.

More: Gwen Stefani was legitimately worried she'd hate Blake Shelton's duet

Adorable, to be sure, but something else caught our eye in this video: the gigantic rock on Stefani's right hand.

Seriously, it's huge. It doesn't look like either of the wedding rings or the engagement ring she sported before her split from Rossdale, but it has a definite wedding vibe, like a stacked engagement and wedding ring.

Before anyone gets too excited, we don't think it's some secret wedding signal with her and Blake Shelton. The ring is on her right hand, after all, and the ink is barely dry on the divorce papers from Rossdale. Hopefully, she and Shelton, who is still recovering from his own divorce from Miranda Lambert, would take things a bit slower, even if she did save his life and he hers.

We revisited the '70s and '90s this week while still battling some modern problems. Never a dull moment, right?

Here are some hot moments in pop culture you might have missed if you weren't paying attention.

1. Robin Wright demands equal pay

In an interview with The Rockefeller Foundation on Tuesday, Wright admitted that she stood up and demanded that she be paid as much as her House of Cards co-star Kevin Spacey.

"I was like, 'I want to be paid the same as Kevin,'" she said. "I was looking at the statistics and Claire Underwood's character was more popular than [Frank's] for a period of time. So I capitalized on it. I was like, 'You better pay me or I'm going to go public.'"

Wright's demands were met.

Meyers resurrected a Saturday Night Live sketch and Andy Samberg's hair circa 2006 for a hilarious "Second Chance Theatre" on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week.

While I can totally understand why this sketch got scrapped back in the day, it still makes me nostalgic for casts of SNL past.

4. Rage Against the Machine launches a new supergroup

Prophets of Rage Instagram

Prophets of Rage Instagram

This week, '90s kids were intrigued when Rage Against the Machine launched a website with a countdown to June 1 and a classic Rage image with #takethepowerback underneath.

Turns out the countdown is not for anything specific to Rage Against the Machine, per se. It's all about guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk joining forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets of Rage, according to Billboard. Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is not involved.

Prophets of Rage will perform for the first time at the Hollywood Palladium on June 3, and a show at L.A.'s Whisky a Go Go is planned as well. Billboard reports that a 2016 summer tour is also in the works.

5. Blake Lively gets spanked on Instagram

Lively caught some major backlash for posting a picture of herself at Cannes with the caption "L.A. face with an Oakland booty" — lyrics from Sir Mix-a-Lot's song "Baby Got Back."

Many felt Lively's use of the lyric was problematic, but Sir Mix-a-Lot himself approved the usage of the lyric and spoke out in support of Lively.

"That song was written with African American women in mind, but trust me, there are white women with those curves everywhere, and they were once considered fat. And that's what the song was about. It wasn't about some race battle," he said, via Pret-a-Reporter.

The Real Housewives should watch the Sister Wives argue and take some notes

It may feel like summer, but it's Thanksgiving on Sister Wives — and the Brown wives are struggling to make nice while they put together a family meal. In a preview for Sunday's episode courtesy of Us Weekly, we see Meri and Janelle Brown get very passive-aggressive over their DIY decorations for Thanksgiving. It's like the ladies from Real Housewives if they were on their best behavior. No table flipping, but there's definitely still a lot of animosity in the air.

More: Sister Wives' Kody Brown reportedly bullying his wives

Although Meri and Janelle Brown decided to plan their Thanksgiving decorations together, Janelle is thrown when she stops by and finds that Meri has gone ahead and created the entire look for the decorations without her. "I can feel myself disengaging from the project because I'm like OK, well, it's done," says Janelle. She tries to be on her best behavior with Meri nonetheless, telling her she'll help and reminding her that she's trying as hard as she can with her limited skill set.

More: Sister Wives' Kody Brown needs to stop being so clueless about Meri

"Janelle really has been a self-proclaimed... not a decorator," says Meri. "I think with her coming over and seeing all this stuff, it's just overwhelming to her." That's a very nice way of saying "I did a much better job here," don't you think? Teresa Giudice would be proud.

Sister Wives star Meri Brown went online in search of companionship. What she found instead was someone who took advantage of her.

More: Sister Wives' Meri's in relationship counseling, but not with Kody Brown

Last year, Brown opened up about finding herself in an online relationship with a woman who had pretended to be a man named Sam. Of course, Brown's catfishing scandal is not new, and it left her family angry and her fans completely shocked. But she's now ready to open up about her awful experience and reveal even more intimate details about the relationship and how she got duped.

In an exclusive clip from the hour-long special Catching the Catfisher, Brown reveals that the person she was speaking to "sounded like a guy with a Southern accent." And they connected really easily. "We laughed a lot. It was easy to connect with him, just because there was so much in common. Looking back at it now, I know exactly why there was so much in common."

Brown didn't realize that she was being lured in and how it's surprisingly easy to look past details that don't add up.

Things escalated quickly. "He was very, very flirty with me. And I have guy friends and I am a little bit flirty too," Brown says. There was a lot of emotion involved, too.

"He was like, 'I really feel like I love you.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, but you know I'm married. I mean, nothing's happening.'"

More: Meri Brown's catfisher is still releasing voicemails & making her life miserable

Brown reveals that she felt an "affection" toward this person in the beginning. Then she details how it all started to become fishy and there was some excuse as to why "Sam" couldn't meet up with her, and instead she met his best friend, Lindsay.

"I was not comfortable around her," Brown admits. "I just got the creeps from her. But I'm sitting here trying to be nice to her because this is a friend of his."

And things took a sinister turn when Lindsay started threatening Brown, saying, "'I will ruin your life. And I will ruin your family.'"

Charlize Theron & Sean Penn have an awkward day at Cannes

Charlize Theron wants to quit Sean Penn so badly, but she can't — not while there's a terrible movie to promote.

The formerly engaged couple split almost a year ago, but they've been thrown together again and again since the breakup to promote their film The Last Face, directed by Penn and starring Theron. Their latest run-in happened in Cannes and, well, it doesn't appear that their relationship has thawed at all.

The pair did not stand anywhere near each other, with Theron's co-stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and Javier Bardem making sure there was plenty of distance, and they did not interact during the photo call. They also sat separately during the press conference that followed.

Penn kept a sourpuss look on his face throughout the day, which may have had less to do with the presence of his ex and more to do with the viscerally terrible reaction his film received at the Cannes Film Festival.

More: Charlize Theron finally addresses her unexpected split from Sean Penn

The movie is so bad that Cannes audience members alternately booed at the screen and laughed at what were supposed to be highly dramatic moments.

Calling it the worst film of Penn's career, IndieWire's Eric Kohn wrote, "The narrative panders on every level: It's a supercilious attempt to bemoan the hardships of neglected people under the guise of whiny romantic fluff."

The Guardian's Benjamin Lee gave it one star, calling the movie "an extended Band Aid video, shoddily assembled to be screened at galas filled with the guilty elite sipping champagne while frowning at close-ups of tearful orphans."

But the best — or worst, depending on how you look at it — comments were reserved for Twitter.

Shark Tank debuts product that no one should ever, ever actually use

After several very inspiring pitches, Shark Tank ended its latest season with one of the show's most dramatic standoffs yet. The Sharks got nastier than they have in a long time, but on this particular occasion, the nastiness was well deserved.

More: Shark Tank is better when the Sharks offer advice, not insults

Entrepreneur Maneesh Sethi's pitch seemed dubious from the very beginning. His product, Pavlok, promises to break bad habits with the power of a shock to the wrist. The goal is to train the reptilian brain to associate problematic behaviors with a slight but very uncomfortable electric stimulus.

Pavlok on Shark Tank
Image: ABC

The concept is modeled, of course, on aversion conditioning. While there is certainly merit to the idea that a habit can be broken if the brain associates it with a negative stimulus, that doesn't necessarily work in practice with Pavlok. Users have to actually think about the behavior and zap themselves in response, but many of the habits the product seeks to correct are so ingrained that people's awareness of them just isn't there. Also, even if people do catch themselves engaging in problematic behaviors, there's no guarantee that they will actually follow through with shocking themselves.

More: Shark Tank's Sharks go overboard with health product critiques

The Sharks were skeptical about consumers' willingness to zap themselves, but they were even more concerned with Sethi's apparent lack of evidence. He seemed to be basing his product almost entirely on studies conducted by other parties several decades ago. Aversion conditioning may prove effective in certain contexts, but extensive clinical trials are needed before Sethi can guarantee that his product is more than a pain-inducing piece of plastic.

Mark Cuban
Image: ABC

Several Sharks were disappointed with the pitch, but none more than Mark Cuban, who quickly launched into a long-winded rant about all the ways Sethi's product was a scam. Cuban even referred to Sethi as a con artist. His thinking was clearly reflected on Twitter, where users bashed Sethi for his alleged attempt at scamming vulnerable individuals. Kevin O'Leary — who, shockingly, made an offer — was represented among the Pavlok-bashing Twitter users.

I've seen a lot of bad pitches on Shark Tank but few as cringe-worthy as Sethi's for Pavlok. Even without the slightly scammy feel of the product, I would have been put off by Sethi's general demeanor. This isn't exactly the uplifting end to the season I was hoping for, but it was certainly entertaining!

Kim Kardashian blasts Rob Kardashian & Chyna for not supporting the family

Kim Kardashian isn't opposed to welcoming Blac Chyna (aka Angela Kardashian) to the family — as long as she steps up and starts acting like a Kardashian. In a recent clip from Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim blasted brother Rob Kardashian for allowing more drama to seep into their inner circle, thanks to his pregnant better half, Chyna.

Even though she is officially a Kardashian now, Chyna has, in the past, used her social media fame to bash the Kardashian and Jenner family. Kylie Jenner was the numero uno victim of her rage, which is perfectly understandable given the web of crazy that was created when a then-underage Kylie began dating Tyga, with whom Chyna has a baby boy (Kylie and Tyga have since split up).

All water under the bridge, according to Kim, who is willing to move on — but warned Rob that he and Chyna need to do the same. "I never get pissed and I'm so for you being happy, but whatever Chyna and Kylie and all the drama that they have together, like, that's for them to work out," Kim told Rob over the phone. "Mom has bent over backwards doing all this stuff. Mom is pissed. When you start publicly bashing my sister and mom, that's not cool. This is just unnecessary. This is not what our family does. Like, there's way too much drama, so many haters in the world, we don't need this from our own inside circle."

More: Kim Kardashian legit can't wait for Rob Kardashian to be a dad

That last bit about disrespecting Kris Jenner takes aim at Chyna and Rob for making fun of Kris for stocking their house (on her dime) with foods like quinoa and sorbet. Chyna can be heard cracking jokes about healthy foods like oatmeal, which isn't a crime — but I can't blame Kim for wanting Chyna and Rob to cool it for a bit with their family rants.

chyna rob

chyna rob

Kim is proving to be one of Rob and Chyna's biggest supporters and allies, but that doesn't mean her loyalty isn't to her family first. In the same upcoming episode of KUWTK, Kim admits she understands why Chyna felt such intense animosity toward her family before settling down with Rob — but that her loyalty to Kylie comes before any empathy she feels toward a family outsider.

"I understand that Kylie dating Tyga completely broke Chyna's heart," Kim said. "I feel for her in that situation. Was it uncomfortable for me when Kylie and Tyga started to date? Absolutely, because Chyna was my friend. But I had no choice but to take my sister's side. That's my sister."

Here's Kim explaining to Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian the extremely awkward situation Rob put her in with Chyna:

The big question now: Will Chyna agree to fall into line with the Kardashian family? Or are they going to have to welcome Chyna and Rob — just the way they are?

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom make their relationship Instagram official

It's not like we weren't already squealing over Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's relationship — but now we have photographic Instagram proof that they are freaking awesome together.

The beautiful singer and her equally beautiful actor boyfriend are spending quality time together in Cannes and attending events as part of the Cannes Film Festival. When Perry and Bloom walked the red carpet separately at the amfAR Gala in Cannes, where Perry performed, some might have questioned whether they were even still an item. Throw in all of those recent rumors about Selena Gomez cozying up to Bloom, and it seemed as if they really were over and out.

And then, in one adorable and funny photo, the couple proved everyone wrong.

Perry and Bloom posed in their white bathrobes on the steps of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, and her caption is everything:

More: Katy Perry shuts down Orlando Bloom and Selena Gomez rumors with one tweet

Perry and Bloom have reportedly been dating since January, when they connected at Harvey Weinstein's 2016 Golden Globes after-party. True, they haven't been an item for very long, but sources say they are crazy about each other and are only too happy to be moving full steam ahead with their relationship. Bloom, who was previously married to model Miranda Kerr, reportedly took Perry with him to England to meet his mom and family. There's also sweet talk of Perry bonding with Flynn, Bloom and Kerr's 5-year-old son.

More: Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom's relationship is reportedly moving very quickly

Perry deserves happiness and a stable relationship (she was married to actor Russell Brand for two years before their divorce in 2012). She and Bloom seem incredibly happy and sweetly private about their relationship. Here's hoping they continue to open up just a wee bit more so we can get more fantastic photos like this one.

Erotic novel Frozen Stiff lives up to the title and this excerpt is proof

$

Frozen Stiff by LJ Vickery, new from Wild Rose Press, tells the story of an immortal god who can't find love until his Chosen shows up and rocks his world.

About the book:

Enten, the god of winter, has spent centuries avoiding rejection from women. He might be cold to the depths of his very soul, but one woman — his Chosen — holds the key to melting his permafrost. To keep her, though, he must embrace the heat sweeping through his heart — and his body. Unfortunately, he and the group of gods he calls brothers are trapped on Earth's plane by a malevolent force that could bring violence to his Chosen's doorstep.

Gloria Wingfeather lived through hell, physically and emotionally singed by the viciousness of her ex-husband. For years, she's dedicated her time and her heart to making a life for herself. The sexy god of chill has the potential to heal those charred wounds or to set her ablaze with passion.

Your tease of an excerpt from Frozen Stiff:

"You're awake." The female's soft voice washed over Enten like gentle waves.

"I am." He almost swallowed his tongue, getting his first glimpse of the woman poised above him. Holy shit. He didn't know where to look first. Her mahogany eyes, fixed to his, were large in her dusky brown face and surrounded by the longest, thickest lashes he'd ever seen. But her mouth... pink as a conch shell's secret whorls, pouty and plump, begging to be kissed. His eyes traveled to her long and regal nose, which had Enten believing the angel astride him had been born of kings. Her whole visage, surrounded by the softest looking riot of dark curls, held him spellbound.

"Glorious," he whispered, and color rose on her cheeks.

"No. Actually, my name is Gloria," she corrected. "Glory for short."

Glorious. Glory, Enten revealed to his fellow gods. She is mine, he cried. My Glory. He wanted to roar it to the heavens. He had heard everything his fellow gods said, and now knew ― because Lahar shared Glory's blood ― that she was not his relative but his Chosen.

He drew in several deep breaths, his eyes on the vibrant woman. He needed to calm the fuck down, because really, he should be apprehensive. Once she got a load of who he was, and what he was, she could just as easily reject him as accept him. He scowled at the realization. What could he possibly do to make this warm, lovely bundle atop him consider an eternity as his mate? Just because his amulet would eventually declare "keepsies" on her, didn't mean she would necessarily be on board. Short of kidnapping, there was nothing he could do to force her to be his other half.

Back in ancient Mesopotamia, all goddesses had steered clear of him physically, labeling him a freak, even amongst gods. Only in the vicinity of the Zagros Mountains of Asia, where the summer temperatures could reach 130 degrees, was he considered slightly useful — not as a fuck but as a cooling system. And even there, in the winter months, he was shunned once again. The goddesses weren't trying to be mean; they simply found themselves drawn to gods of normal body temperature.

More: Top 12 most sexually charged excerpts from erotica books

When Enten had finally lost his virginity at the age of 2,710 in Merrymount, it had been to a stunning Abenaki woman coming down to trade from Maine. He thought he'd found his perfect match. But after professing an interest in his coldness, even a woman from the most frigid state in New England had moved on to seek warmer robes. He had been severely hurt by her leaving and grown even colder thereafter.

Enten fought back his fears. Maybe it wouldn't be that way with his Chosen. But so far, Gloria seemed hearteningly curious.

"How do you feel? Did you hurt yourself? Where did you come from? Hey. You speak English." She regarded him with wide eyes, her face not 10 inches from his own.

Enten wasn't sure where to begin, but he was happy she had so many questions. It would give him an excuse to keep her snug up against him for a longer period.

More: New YA romance The Lost Data is fun, sexy and impossible to put down

"I'm fine. I don't think I'm hurt, and yes, I speak perfect English. I'm from Quincy, which is right across the bay.”

He saw puzzlement wash over her face. "Then why are you dressed like..." She started to look down at his loincloth, where their hips joined, and must have thought better of it. He could swear she almost blushed.

Enten had to think quickly before she moved away. He needed to explain his dress and his current position, but it couldn't include anything about gods. At least not yet.

Don't expect to see Calvin Harris at the Billboard Music Awards after his car accident

Musician Calvin Harris was injured in a car crash on Friday in Los Angeles and has been forced to cancel two shows while he recovers.

The Scottish DJ, who has been dating Taylor Swift for more than a year, was a passenger in a Cadillac SUV when a 16-year-old female driver in a Volkswagen Beetle convertible reportedly crossed over the center divider and hit Harris' vehicle. The girl, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from her seat and is being treated for a broken pelvis. There were other passengers in her car at the time, but their conditions are unknown.

Harris was taken to a hospital and treated for, among other injuries, a cut to the nose. He has since been released and is recovering.

More: Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris put their love on display

A representative for Harris, whose real name is Adam Wiles, released this statement about the incident: "Adam was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck in a serious collision last night in Los Angeles. He was examined by doctors and sustained a number of injuries. He has since been checked out of the hospital and is now recovering. We wish all the other passengers involved in the incident a fast recovery.

"As a result, he was not able to perform in Las Vegas at his OMNIA residency and will be unable to perform tonight at Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama."

Harris was set to headline the Hangout Festival and was on his way to the airport when the accident took place. And with the Billboard Music Awards happening on Sunday, May 22, we likely won't see him there either.

No word yet from Swift, but you can be sure the singer will rush to be by his side. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for everyone involved in this scary incident.
